Landfill Gas Extraction and Reuse

R.A. Mathlener

Technical Director, Environmental Resources Management (ERM NL)

Introduction

A business consortium (ERM-Nederland, Afvalzorg Deponie, ENW Power and Petrogas Gas-systems – Dutch companies – and FOLOS Consultants - Romania) has been formed to conduct a feasibility study on the coverage of a landfill in combination with the extraction and use of biogas for producing electricity in Romania. The consortium is particularly strong because it includes Afvalzorg Deponie and ENW Power as potential investors and FOLOS as a Romanian counterpart.

The study is partly financed by the consortium and partly by the Programme Economic Co-operation Projects (Programma Economische Samenwerking Projecten (PESP 1995) of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The programme offers financial support for Dutch businesses preparing for future export transactions.

The consortium wishes to undertake a feasibility pilot study for the coverage of a landfill, and the extraction and re-use of biogas in Romania, taking into account that Romania has a specific bilateral “state” relation with the Netherlands.

The implementation of these measures is in line with the European and Dutch Policy on Joint Implementation and limiting the environmental impact on a global and regional scale. The results of this project could also assist in meeting the targets on sustainable energy (i.e. green electricity).

Feasibility study

This feasibility study is aimed at the coverage of the landfill in combination with the extraction and use of the biogas in Romania. On the basis of the following criteria: economical and institutional potential, environment, energy and technology it will be determined what the overall possibilities and the conditions are.

For the implementation of extraction and re-use facilities, the following (Dutch) equipment will be required: vertical gas extraction wells, well heads, header units and condense units, appendages, transport facilities (pipes), gas engine, generator, flare including compressors etc.
